Of course, trying to create a world and story that can dynamically shift based on the whims of the character would be an insanely large undertaking at this point without the help of some crazy AI infrastructure to work with that could generate outcomes on demand. Now apply the story changing like this to -every- decision you make there would easily be tens of thousands of unique stories that could be told within one such game. Sure, some games, like Dark Souls, allow you to kill vendors or severely piss them off to the point of attacking you on sight should you come near them, but none of that ever changes the story or how the game ends (besides maybe triggering a 'bad end' flag for being a dick). Outside of that the character will either be invulnerable, you'll fail for having killed an important character, they'll die and every other character will act like the character is still alive or never existed (generally only applicable if the character has served their main story purpose), or they'll simply respawn as if nothing happened. Currently, the only time you could do such a thing in a game would be when it's a scripted mission with the intention of doing so.

What if in, say, an open-world game like GTA or Skyrim you decide to kill a main character (ie a mentor or mob guy you work for, etc) at the first opportunity and from here the whole story changes based around that event. Until games can handle dynamically adapting stories where the whole thing can change based on single choices, I fear we'll have to deal with varying shades of a binary choice system - you're either going for the good route or the bad route, basically. Morality choice systems, in general, still have a long way to go. So, anyone else agree that the binary 'playing for points' nature of the paragon /renegade system can hamper the role playing of Mass Effect? Nothing is really 'good' or 'bad' there are no meters to fill up just choices to be made and the consequences that follow. I do however really like choice affecting your game I specifically like how Dragon Age and the Witcher handles choice. Going in knowing that you are going to choose choice 'A' over choice 'B' because you need as many Paragon points as you can I think breaks some of the narrative tension. Your playing for points to fill up a bar and in the case of ME2 you can't even get the best ending of the game unless you completly commit to one side. Do you wanna be good guy shepard or do you wanna be a jerk? Now, even breaking this down to being so binary could be okay except there is really no reason to play it down the middle and take choices on a case by case basis. The reason it bugs me so much is because it makes all 'choices' completely binary.

Look, not trying to disparage the Mass Effect series in anyway they are great games but one thing has always bugged me especially so in ME2 and that is the Renegade/Paragon system.
